As a young boy, Jefferson Energy Director Martin Thompson remembered seeing the power lines and poles outside of his house. But there was no power. World War II had put a halt to the construction of those lines. It wasn’t until the war ended that he and his family finally received electricity in their home.
“Like most people back then, we just got the necessities. We had a refrigerator and a well pump to begin with,” says Thompson. More appliances followed later, which gave him a great appreciation for what electricity has done since that time. In his words, Thompson saw the beginning of an “era of convenience,” all brought on by electricity.
While in the Army, Thompson spent two years doing medical research at a branch of Walter Reed Hospital at Fort Knox. Other than that, he has lived on the same farm property in the McBean Community since he was five years old. He is a graduate of Hephzibah High School and later attended Augusta College. (105545-01) Thompson’s career path led him to International Paper where he was the supervisor of the Power Department. After 38 years with International Paper, he retired.
Thompson now enjoys spending time with Patsy, his wife of 21 years. They have four children, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren that keep them busy. In his spare time, he likes to hunt, fish and work on just about anything in his shop.
Thompson is a member of Berlin United Methodist Church in Hephzibah and is involved with the Hephzibah Agricultural Club. He has also been involved with the Jaycees and the volunteer fire department.
Having served on the Jefferson Energy Board of Directors for the past eight years, Thompson feels he brings a good mix to the Board. “I’m a people person,” says Thompson. “I’m always willing to listen to the concerns of our members, and I try to address those concerns as best I can.” Thompson also says the unity of the Board and the good working relationship they have often makes tough decisions a little easier. “The Board members of Jefferson Energy will always strive to provide the best possible service at the most economical price. That’s our goal,” says Thompson.
When asked about the future of the electric utility industry, Thompson says that technology is certainly helping things run smoother and more efficiently. (7973-04) That being said, it is also a challenge for the Board to make sure that Jefferson Energy adapts to the fast pace at which technology is growing. “We have to make sure we utilize the technology that’s available and keep up as it changes. We also have to ensure that our procedures are safe and efficient as we move forward,” says Thompson.
Kenneth Cook, President and CEO of Jefferson Energy Cooperative, says, “Jefferson Energy is proud to have Martin Thompson as a part of our Board. His concern for our members, the community and the co-op itself has made him a great asset.”
